Unique Majorette Academy: Look what our Property Consultant Corrin does when she’s not at Sugarhouse!


When I am not managing properties, I manage my own Majorette Troupe!

For those who don’t have a clue what 'Majorettes' is; you will more than likely have seen it in any American film based in a high school setting; it's normally a girl at the front of the school band spinning a baton. What we do is much more than that! It's a mix of twirling, dance, gymnastics and some aspects of cheerleading. Although, it’s batons we throw into the air and not people!

If someone told me when I twirled a baton for the first time that it would evolve into such a huge part of my life; I would never have believed them. From the tender age of 12 I have been very passionate about my sport! Although I am not quite as nimble and energetic as I used to be, I still manage to keep my passion alive through teaching others.

My sister and I founded Unique Majorette Academy way back in 2008 and have had the pleasure of teaching over 100 members since then. It can be very demanding at times; both mentally and physically… But it is definitely worth the stress. Nothing beats the look on a member’s face when you help them master a new trick; or the feeling of winning first place at National Competitions! Those moments in themselves are payment enough for the hard work and dedication it takes to keep things running smoothly.

Everything we do is on a voluntary basis and funding for non-regulated sports, such as Majorettes, is very hard to come by. However, this year we have been selected to take part in Radio Aire’s Cash for Kids Charity Sport Challenge (a bit of a mouthful, I know!). This is an incredible opportunity to raise some much needed funds for our team. If we are successful enough to be the winner of this competition we could receive a donation of up to £2,500.00!

With the monies we raise we aim to provide our members with new uniforms and equipment; both of which are long overdue. We are also hoping that we will be able to transform our training venue into a proper dance studio… Mirrors would massively improve our training processes and help our dancers prepare for competitions with much more confidence if they can clearly see how amazing they are.
