Top Tips for getting through the Coronavirus outbreak!

Over the coming weeks, we know there will be a huge amount of people who are forced to work from home, or who may be sadly out of work for a while due to the Coronavirus outbreak. We know that its proving to be a very difficult and uncertain time in many ways for everyone, but we will try in any way we can to ease some of the worry – starting with a few top tips on how to stay productive when working from home and how to stay positive in these turbulent times.

  • Give yourself a designated place to work
No, that doesn’t mean from your bed! By staying in bed all day working on your laptop, your productivity is likely to be relatively low, and on top of which, you’re likely to feel much more awake if you get up at a reasonable time, have a shower and breakfast, and then sit at a kitchen table or desk to get on with your work!
  • Keep a routine!
It’s really important to maintain a routine when your normal routine goes out the window. By holding on to some form of normality, you’ll stay on track with things you need to do, work related tasks, eating and sleeping correctly, which will in turn help you to feel more positive rather than the days all rolling into one!
  • Give yourself the time frame to work in
If you’re used to a particular workday timetable, try your best to stick to it. If you have a list of tasks to complete that day, knowing when your lunch break or coffee break is, will encourage productivity. It is important however, to make sure that you start at the correct time and switch yourself into ‘work mode’, but also to clock out on time, turn off the laptop and allow yourself time to eat, relax and do other things that you’d do with your evenings.
  • Eating and Exercise
Even when the bars, restaurants and cafes close, and social distancing is in full swing, one of the most important recommendations from the Government is to continue to exercise where you can. Whether it’s a home workout in front of the TV, or a run around the local park, exercise releases endorphins which boost your mood and will also be a welcome break from uni work or work tasks. Remember to continue to eat sensibly too and at the normal times for you – keep the routine, your body will thank you for it!
  • Stay in contact!
This is likely for a lot of people, particularly the elderly or those who live alone, to be a period of loneliness. As the government advice changes over the coming weeks, we must remember to stay in touch with our loved ones, check in on them even if you’re unable to visit as you would normally, and try to help them out where you can if possible. If you’re working from home, staying in touch with your colleagues will help you to ensure that you can keep up to date with what’s happening in all departments and how others are keeping themselves busy!
