Sugarhouse are excited to introduce you to Aadam, our Accounts Assistant who recently passed his AAT Bookkeeping Qualification...

Aadam joined the team in August 2017 as an apprentice, and has become a valued member of the accountancy department.

How did you become an apprentice at Sugarhouse?

I applied for the apprenticeship through Key Training, a government funded body who aim to help young people start their careers. Key Training were my training provider during my apprenticeship and they were very supportive.


Why accountancy?

I chose to start a career in accounts because one of my family members is a chartered accountant. Speaking to him about his job made me realise I wanted to pursue a career in this field, and I love it! I have a passion for numbers which was another reason why accountancy made sense.

What does your daily role entail?

My day is spent raising and processing invoices, chasing tenant arrears, bank reconciliation, paying landlords and contractors. Solving problems is also a key part of my role at Sugarhouse, whether it be answering questions regarding our landlord statements or addressing queries that contractors raise.

How have you found working at Sugarhouse?

Working at Sugarhouse has been brilliant. I have learnt many new things and through working here I have gained more knowledge in accountancy. The best part is that all the tasks I carry out at work relate to my college work.

Any advice for those looking to start a similar career?

Don’t be afraid to apply for apprenticeships. Working as an apprentice at Sugarhouse lead to me being offered a full-time role in the accounts team. Passing my apprenticeship and accountancy exams whilst working here has been great; I received a lot of support from everyone and it’s made the whole process of learning to be an accountant even more enjoyable and completely worthwhile.

What's next for you?

I’m looking to complete my AAT studies by 2020, which will mean that I am a qualified AAT accountant. After I finish this, I will be moving on to chartered studies (ACCA), which I will be able to complete whilst still working at Sugarhouse. I am hoping to gain more responsibility here this year and I look forward to progressing.
